The Mental Load of Motherhood: Caring for Everyone Starts with Caring for You
May is a month that holds two important reminders:
Mental Health Awareness Month
Mother’s Day
And while motherhood can be beautiful and deeply meaningful, it can also be exhausting, overwhelming, isolating, and emotionally heavy.
At Pursuing Wellness, we believe it’s time to talk honestly about the mental load mothers carry, the invisible weight of remembering, planning, nurturing, giving, and holding everything together.
Because behind the smiles, packed lunches, school pickups, appointments, and endless to-do lists… many mothers are quietly running on empty.
Mothers Need Support Too
So often, moms are the ones checking on everyone else while ignoring their own needs.
They pour into their children, relationships, homes, and work—yet struggle to give themselves permission to rest.
Mental health challenges in motherhood can look like:
Feeling emotionally overwhelmed or overstimulated
Constant guilt or self-pressure
Anxiety about “doing enough”
Burnout and exhaustion
Losing touch with personal identity outside of motherhood
And sometimes, moms feel like they have to keep pushing through because everyone depends on them.
But the truth is:
You cannot continuously pour from an empty cup without eventually feeling depleted.
Motherhood Was Never Meant to Be Done Alone
This May, let’s normalize:
Asking for help
Taking breaks without guilt
Going to therapy or coaching
Setting boundaries
Saying “I’m struggling”
Prioritizing mental and emotional wellness
Strong mothers are not the ones who never fall apart.
They’re the ones who allow themselves to be human.
A Gentle Reflection for Moms
Take a moment and ask yourself:
What do I need right now?
What has been draining me lately?
What brings me peace, joy, or rest?
When was the last time I cared for myself the way I care for others?
You matter too.
Not just as a mother.
But as a person.
This Month, Choose Compassion Over Perfection
You do not need to be the perfect mom.
Your children do not need perfection—they need connection, presence, safety, and love.
Some days will be messy. Some days will feel heavy.
And some days, simply making it through is enough.
Give yourself grace this season.
